Black Women of Vassar College
The pilot film of the Video Dialogue Project is a short film about Black Women of Vassar College. By
fostering discussion among black women of Vassar, including students, staff,
faculty, and alumnae, this project aims to create empowering dialogues that
will be shared with the Vassar community and beyond. This video will be used to help illuminate the personal narratives and work of an integral but often unheard part of Vassar.
This project captures a crucial moment in Vassar’s history, in which Vassar demonstrates its dedication to inclusive thought and progressive action that honors each individual’s lived experiences and unique knowledges.
Many students from the Poughkeepsie community find it difficult to imagine the reality of Vassar beyond their impressions of it as white, upper-class, and isolated institution. This project is an opportunity to help break down false conceptions of Vassar while building important bridges with the community and highlighting Vassar as a meaningful place of learning and friendship for many people of color.
Participants in this film include:
Professor Diane Harriford (Sociology, Women's Studies, and Africana Studies)
Cathy Bradford (Dining Services, ACDC)
Tanay Tatum '12
Assefash Makonnen '12
Martha Lino '14
Niya Nicholson '14
Renee Bryant ‘15
Lily Ngaruiya ’15
Asia Alman '17
